managed by Firstborn Creatives
One of the two aims of the scheme is to develop the skills, experience and confidence of five trainees, and enhance their prospects of gaining employment in the film, television and digital media industries. The other aim is to develop individuals who come from groups under-represented in particular aspects of the industry. The UK Film Council and South West Screen have identified women, minority ethnic and disabled people amonst such groups.
"Women, who make up 77% of cinema cleaners, only account for 10% of camera people and 8% of lighting technicians. An analysis carried out by the bfi found that of 350 films made in the UK, only 8 were directed by women. The proportion of disabled employees in the audiovisual industry has remained unchanged since 2001 at 0.8% - well below the national average of disabled people in the workforce."
