'Community Media - Community Communication in the UK: video, local TV, film and photography'
Heinz Nigg and Graham Wade, Regenbogen-Verlag Zurich, 1980

Very interesting and useful documentary reports on six groups working in community media in the UK. Reading it today shows how concerns that existed 25 years ago are still present today, and also how technology has moved certain things forward.

'Many Voices, One World: Communication and Society, Today and Tomorrow - The MacBride Report.'
Sean MacBride, et al. Kogan Page/Unipub/Unesco, 1980. 1988 Reprint.

Very important historical report commissioned by Unesco that caused much controversy when it was eventually published, as it went beyond its given remit and suggested media be made accessable to all, not just in the hands of the few.

'Art Education 11-18'
Richard Hickman, Continuum Books, 2004, 2nd Edition

An excellent book about similar concerns, although from a formal education arts perspective. Really useful for locating pedagogic contexts of arts education.

Kevin Howley, Cambridge University Press, 2005

Informative new book exploring community media (alternative radio & television) in relation to community community, cultural production and the public sphere.

'Mass Media and Society'
Edited by James Curran and Michael Gurevitch, Arnold Publishers, 2000

Thorough analysis and furthering the debate of mass media's impact on society. Useful chapter by James Curran titled, "Rethinking Media and Democracy".

'The No-Nonsense Guide to Global Media'
Peter Steven, Verso, 2003

Very easy to read, (but also very in-depth and scholarly), pocket size overview of mass media around the world, ending with a case for the growth of wider democratisation of the media. Although he doesn't use the term directly, he suggestes the spread of community media activity with a political agenda to counter the hegemony that exists in the current media climate around the world.

'Art in the age of Mass Media'
John Walker, Pluto Press, 2001

Not very useful about education, but ok in terms of relating impact of media on art & design. Will be more useful when having to cross reference art education with media education.

'Dictionary of Media and Communication Studies'
James Watson, Anne Hill, Arnold Publishers. 2003. 6th Edition

Dictionaries of any kind are useful. This is great for highlighting further research leads and references.
